Matagorda, Dominican Republic

More Than a House. A Community.

In August 2026, SOAR traveled alongside TECHO to Matagorda, a vulnerable community in the Dominican Republic, for our first major community project.

What began as a trip to help build a home became an experience that changed the way we understood service.

We arrived ready to work. We left understanding that true service is not simply about what you give—it is about showing up, listening, building alongside others, and recognizing the dignity that already exists within a community.

Building Together

Our team worked alongside TECHO and members of the community to help construct a safe and dignified home for a family.

We measured.
We carried materials.
We built.
We learned.
We worked together.

But the project was never just about construction.

Every wall represented safety. Every piece of the home represented dignity. And every hour of work represented a relationship built between people who might otherwise have never met.

Beyond Construction

Our work in Matagorda extended beyond building a home.

SOAR helped support the preparation and distribution of hygiene and health resources, while participating in community workshops focused on topics including hygiene, public health, youth empowerment, life skills, and environmental awareness.

These moments reminded us that meaningful change requires more than one solution. A home is a foundation—but a stronger community is built through continued support, education, opportunity, and connection.

What We Learned

Matagorda taught us that service is not about arriving with the belief that we have all the answers.

It is about arriving willing to listen, learn, and work alongside the people who know their community best.

We learned that a small action can carry enormous meaning. We learned that dignity should never be treated as a privilege. And we learned that the most meaningful impact often comes from simply being willing to show up.

Our First Project. Not Our Last.

Matagorda was the beginning of SOAR's journey into hands-on community service.

We came to build a house.

We left with a deeper understanding of community, dignity, resilience, and what it truly means to serve.
